In by ombudsman

An inmate at a halfway house contacted the Ombudsman for help with the facility’s broken elevator. The inmate had surgery on his ankle and was not supposed to put any weight on it. However, with the elevator not working, the inmate was forced to go up and down stairs several times a day. Although halfway houses are outside the jurisdiction of the Ombudsman, the investigator contacted the Department of Corrections (DOC) liaison that handles complaints involving halfway houses to alert him of the problem. DOC agreed to investigate the broken elevator situation, and if it was not repaired within 24 hours, to transfer the inmate to a different halfway house with a working elevator. The inmate reported later that he had been transferred. (A2015- 0413)
