A state employee contacted the Ombudsman to complain about the retirement system. He explained that he has been a public school teacher for the past 30 years and, during the summers, he works a seasonal position with the state. He recently learned that he was not being credited for the seasonal service in the public employees’ retirement system. The Ombudsman reviewed the pertinent statutes and learned that service credit in both the teachers and public employees’ retirement systems is capped, meaning that people who work in both systems can’t earn more than one year of service credit regardless of how much time they spend working in either system. The Division of Retirement and Benefits was accurately reporting the complainant’s service credit. (A2016-1833)
